![]() ![]() This is one of those books that I will read again and again, the words always the same, but the meaning cutting just as deep each time. A story of injustice and hardship, holding so much truth between the pages, this book spoke to me on some deeper level that I wish I could fully understand. Beautifully written love stories enmeshed with the pain of clashing cultural ideals and needs. Spitz’s novel Island of Shattered Dreams to anybody interested in indigenous peoples, the Pacific Islands, nuclear warfare, environmental justice, modernity, globalization, and intercultural relationships. How could they have protected themselves, swept away by time suddenly rushing on, drowned in values so different from their own, in a world where profit and corruption rule people’s minds?” ![]() The white man’s craziness has once again struck this quiet island, maddening its inhabitants who haven’t been able to protect themselves against the devastating torrent of western modernity. “In twenty years Ruahine has gone through the kinds of changes that took place over two millennia in Metropolitan France. ![]()

The sandman vol 3 dream country6/30/2023 ![]() ![]() I love when writers look inward and explore the hidden costs of their success, even if they’re fictional in nature. “Calliope” is dark and jarring, as many Sandman tales are. But then, Morpheus escapes his imprisonment, and he’s not happy with how Madoc has treated Calliope… ![]() We see firsthand the cost of his success: namely, the happiness and well-being of one mysterious woman. ![]() To Richard, Calliope is an object of inspiration and a receptical for his sexual urges. He keeps Calliope locked up and does terrible things to her. Film producers flock to him, hoping to hitch a ride on the back of his hard work and make a pretty penny in the process. His works are lauded by critics and audiences alike. Struggling author Richard Madoc trades a Bezoar for a beautiful muse/hostage named Calliope, and all of his dreams come true. Instead, I’ll briefly explore each of the four stories in the volume. Each one has its standout moments, and the collection is a worthwhile pit stop along the larger Sandman path we walk together.ĭream Country isn’t a typical Sandman collection, so this won’t be a typical Sandman review. These snappy interludes add new layers and depths to the world depicted in Sandman ’s sprawling universe. Sandman Volume Three: Dream Country regales us with four diminutive dreamy tales. I’m back with another Sandman review! Today, we take a break from the large story arcs that made Neil Gaiman a comic-book writer to be reckoned with. ![]()

Falling Free by Lois McMaster Bujold6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() To wit: What if a massive conglomerate with interplanetary interests commisioned biologists to genetically engineer a species of human maximized for life in freefall? What if this species was considered corporate property and not strictly human? And to drive the ethical considerations to the fore, what would happen if, for some reason, these engineered humans became completely obsolete? ![]() Regardless, I was pretty excited about digging into it, because I thought the premise teemed with all sorts of possibilities for drama and adventure. Bujold inspires a lot of hard-core love among the geeks, and I’ve been meaning to check out her Vorkosigan saga for several years now.įalling Free is set in the Vorkosigan universe, though it takes place about 200 years before Miles is born and its events are only tangentially related to the greater Vorkosigan saga. I mean, one of my best friends wrote about Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan for his college entry essay- and he got in. I’ve heard a lot about Lois McMaster Bujold. ![]()
